The Georgia Institute of Technology has two excellent, interrelated MS programs:
MS in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) [2]
Both are part of the Institute's Graphics, Visualization, and
Usability (GVU) Center. [3]

To post to this list . discuss at ixda.org Kansas University has been offering interaction design as an informal cross disciplinary degree as a Masters of Arts for many years, as well as a PhD in design through the School of Education in cooperation with the design department.
They are currenty formalizing the following:
MA - Interaction Design
Additionally, they are finishing up plans for a combination MBA and Design Management degree.

To post to this list . discuss at ixda.org As a graduate of Indiana University's Human-Computer Interaction/Design
Master's Degree program, I am obliged to share my experience as a student
there. IU's HCI/d curriculum based on design school philosophies, and offers
classes in traditional and non-traditional HCI topics. The professors are
caring and brilliant, students are made to feel that they really have a
place in the program and that they are studying to carry out an important
role in an increasingly technology-centered society. The final capstone
project gives each student the opportunity to display the techniques they
have learned in the program. I swear they aren't paying me to say this.but
I wouldn't trade my IU HCI/d education for the world.

To post to this list . discuss at ixda.org I haven't yet seen mention of the EMMA program in the Netherlands.
I did my MA there a couple years ago. Very creative faculty and a rewarding
program. I'd recommend it to those who are comfortable with self-directed
study, as it's a lightly structured program (taught in English, but very
Dutch culturally) and is probably a better fit for those with a running
start on what they want to pursue academically.
Eric
Judy,
I am a little biased since I teach in the program, but I recommend Florida
International University's Human Factors program. It is housed in an
Enterprise Systems Design program, so it focuses on designing big scale
interactions like social networks, e-business systems and the like. The
interaction design in that kind of system is much more interesting than
what I have seen being done at a lot of other programs.
And the other benefit is that you get to live in sunny Miami !!

Hi Soo,
I went to NYU's ITP, graduated in 2005.
It's a great program with an extremely diverse offering in terms of
courses, faculty; the students are almost 50% international. The
program has evolved over time, & is constantly changing to keep pace
with the field. What I loved about ITP was, apart from some wonderful
people I met, the chance to dabble with different technologies:
digital video, audio, physical computing, mobile, etc. ITP is strong
on experimentation, so if you like a less structured, playful
approach to things, you'll like it here. That said, it pays to keep
yourself focussed especially in the second year on career goals &
appropriate courses & project work: the party does end, & one may
find one has been playing in the sandbox too long!
So go ahead & apply, though the deadlines should be right around the
corner to join in fall 2007.

One that hasn't been mentioned: Bentley College in Waltham, MA has a MS in
Human Factors in Information Design. It's more heavily weighted to the
cognitive science side of IxD and understanding how we process the world
around us (sight, sound, touch), but there are also required applied courses
in design, research and testing. It also houses the Design and Usability
Testing Center that provides testing services for corporations. Joe Dumas,
PhD who, with Ginny Redish, wrote the book *A Practical Guide to Usability
Testing *teaches there.

To post to this list . discuss at ixda.org Although Simon Fraser University's (http://www.sfu.ca) School of
Interactive arts and Technology (http://www.siat.sfu.ca) is a bit more
low profile, there is a great set of faculty and facilities that have
combined for a great program. It's one of the few undergrad
Interaction Design programs (they also have MA and PHD options). Of
course I'm biased having gone through the program but I would say it
holds its own.

Adrian Chong Rensselaer Polytechnic has a masters degree in HCI, as well as a
certificate, and it is at least to some degree doable remotely. I
am not sure exactly to what extent (I have heard that it is, but also
heard that very few of the necessary courses are actually scheduled
for the "working professionals" distance learning, which would make
it a lengthy proposition to get the degree).
I have been looking for some time for part-time or distance education
options in NYC - if anyone knows of anything, I'd love to hear about
it. (ITP is fulltime only, as is the Parsons design and technology
program). Actually that's another to potentially add to the list:

Stanford has several degrees related to HCI, all of which take courses in
their home departments and under the umbrella d.school (
http://www.stanford.edu/group/dschool/). None of the programs do much to
prepare you in visual design or very specific 2-d interaction design, but
provide a lot of opportunities to engage in product and experience design
since the dschool faculty are pulled heavily from places like IDEO and Jump
Associates.
No matter what program you're in, it's easy to take classes in other
programs.

To post to this list . discuss at ixda.org A European example:
The School of Arts and Communication, Malmö University, Sweden,
offers a 2-year Masters' degree in Interaction Design since 1998. It
is taught in English and the class that started in the Fall of 2006
contains students from four continents.
Studio-based, general emphasis on innovative concept development, use/
activity focus and user participation.
First year provides intro to the scope of the field, with studio
themes such as Mobile computing, Physical computing, Mass media and
interactive media, and Digital gaming.
In the second year, students specialize in a field of their choice
and execute their graduation projects. A couple of design-theoretical
courses are included to enhance reflective and communicative abilities.
Admission once a year, applications in mid-April, studies start
around the end of August. 16 seats available, selection based on
portfolio or design test. As with all Swedish university education,
there are no tuition fees.
Formal info at http://www.edu.mah.se/TIDPZ/ with a link ("Homepage")

student work.

Here is the verbatim copy (minus attachments and names) of an e-mail from

I'm sorry about the wrong info, the Domus Academy and IDI master course in
Interactive Design spaces and objects is open. The 2007 course will start
next 10 of January.
I'll send you the complete brochure of the course and the application form.
Are you interested in 2008 edition?

Hi,
I was searching for Interaction Design courses in Italy, when I first read
this website: http://www.interaction-ivrea.it/
In the mailing list of http://www.ixda.org/ someone mentioned that the
Interaction Design course refered in the interaction-ivrea.it
<http://interaction-ivrea.it <http://interaction-ivrea.it/ is closed. But
from the website:
IDI and Domus Academy unified their Interaction Design Master courses.
During this year, the two individual courses took place within Domus Academy
in Milan. From January 2007 there will only be one Interaction Design Master
course that will sum up the know how and culture of the two prestigious
institutes. The new IDI and Domus Academy I-Design combined course, which
started in January, is certified by the University of Wales, and lasts 12
months carrying 180 credits. It will offer its students an innovative
experience in the didactic nature of this sector, unifying the best of the
experience from both institutions to reach the best results in theory and
practice.
it doesn't seem closed.
I live in Costa Rica and, having studied Computer Science, will start
studying Product Design next year. The idea was to study Interaction Design
later, in Italy. Is this course closed?
thanks I saw someone mentioned Michigan comp sci but I didn't see anyone mention the HCI program at Michigan's School of Information:
http://si.umich.edu/
Faculty include George Furnas, Judy Olson, Gary Olson, and Paul Resnick. I found the program to be strongest in UX research and collaboration/social software/online communities.
Best,
~Noor
As a former student there I want to recommend Umeå Institute of Design
(UID) in Sweden. They have a fully international masters programme in
IxD which has a combination of studio courses, and applied design
projects. Read more at: http://www.dh.umu.se/default.asp?sida=94
Final date for application and portfolio submission is April 15th. The
course starts in September and again as with all Swedish university
education, there are no tuition fees.
According to BusinessWeek's global list of top 200 design programs
2006 (http://bwnt.businessweek.com/dschools/2006/) UID is listed as
one of only 33 listed schools outside of the US.
--Niklas Wolkert What about practice based, interaction arts related phd / research in Europe?
How much of that is available, and could anyone recommend anything in
particular?
